Two oil tankers in the gulf of Oman were attacked on Thursday. The front Altair oil tanker which belongs to Norway’s frontline company was also one of the targets. According to the company’s spokesman, oil tanker has not sunk and is still on fire, but Iran’s news agency IRNA and Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen are claiming that oil tanker has sunk already.  Earlier today, Taiwanese state energy company CPC said that their oil tanker had been hit by a torpedo also, though there is no official confirmation yet. Crew members of both the oil tankers are safe now.

Some news channels reported that second oil tanker “Kokuka Courageous” was Japanese, which was hit by a suspected torpedo. Kokuka Sangyo of Japan, the owner of Kokuka Courageous, confirmed that their ship had been hit and damaged in the recent attack. On 12 May, 4 oil tankers which belonged to different countries were attacked in the similar manner. US President Donald Trump had been briefed on the current situation. Crude prices rose 4% after the recent attacks.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is visiting Tehran when these attacks are carried out. PM Abe has come to Iran with President Trump’s message. Iran did not claim any responsibility for these attacks and the Iranian Foreign Minister mentioned these attacks “Suspicious” on his Twitter.

PM Abe visited Iran to ease high level tensions between US and Iran. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told PM Abe that Iran would not repeat bitter experience of negotiating with US and rejected Trump’s offer to talk. Supreme Leader said “I do not see Trump as worthy of any message exchange, and I do not have any reply for him now, or in future,” he also said, “Iran doesn’t want nuclear bomb, but US couldn’t stop us if we did”.

Different countries are observing the current situation in the region and also trying to cool down the conflicting parties.

SCO members, including Chinese and Russian Presidents, arrived in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) to attend SCO summit. PM Pakistan Imran Khan and the Russian President Putin hold informal meeting on sidelines of 19th SCO summit. Indian PM Narendra Modi and Pakistani PM Imran Khan entered the hall together but did not greet each other and they both sat in the different corners of the hall. Pakistani PM and Indian PM met with the other members of SCO. Earlier, in an interview with Russia’s Sputnik news agency, PM Pakistan said that he hopes that Mr. Modi will use his big election mandate for improving bilateral relations, and to resolve pending issues with Pakistan through constructive dialogue.
